If you are new to golf, learning the basics of the game is a key to your success. It pays to know your golf clubs in order to play a great game of golf.

There are five different types of golf clubs: driver, wedge, iron, wood and putter. Putters, as the name suggests, are the club of choice when you are ready to make those short, delicate putts in the green. At the opposite end of the golf club spectrum lies the wood. This club is great for sending the golf ball flying great distances, 300 yards or more, down the course. The largest heads of all the clubs belong to the woods, and the very largest of the wood clubs is called the driver. Irons are used for various purposes. Some irons are useful for long shots, while others are used in golfing to shoot the ball a short distance with a high trajectory. These clubs are then called wedges, and are used to shoot the golf ball 40 yards or less.

Each golf club is composed of head that hits the ball, the shaft, or long piece of metal, that is topped by the grip. Wood shafts will be the longest in your golf bag, while irons will be shorter.

Golf Clubs are also referred to by a number. The number indicates the severity of the angle behind vertical the face of the head is when it is in position behind the ball. Putters have the least amount of slope, while wedges have a great deal of slope. Woods have less slope than irons, and thus have lower numbers than many of the irons. If there is a hazard on the course that you have to shoot over, you want the ball to go up quite high before it comes down. This is when knowing the number of a particular club can assist you in this endeavor. The number is also an indicator of the amount of spin a club can cause a golf ball to produce. Spin is good, because the spin helps the ball move a greater distance, and leaves it less susceptible to changes in flight patterns due to wind variations. The higher the number of a golf club, the more spin that club can cause in a hit golf ball.

Come test out your clubs and see how well they perform on all the beautiful golf courses in San Diego.
