Whether you are looking for lessons, chipping greens, a large driving range, putting greens or practice bunkers, you will find it all here. One aspect of learning about golf is making sure you understand the unique jargon used when playing the game of golf. To further your knowledge, understanding hole scores can enrich your golf experience.

Out on the golf course, you probably have heard golfers refer to a bogey, par, birdie, an eagle, an even an albatross and a condor. These are the nicknames given to a golfer's score on each hole.

In golfing terms, one over par is called a bogey. The name is based on a dance hall tune called "Here Comes the Bogey Man" that was popular with golfers in the late 19th century Britain. Professional golf players might earn a bogey if they run into trouble at some type of hazard on the golf course, such as water or a bunker, and dealing with it adds an extra stroke to the player's game. It could also happen if a player uses the expected shots to reach the green, but them ends up using an extra stroke to make the putt.

Par means that you have used the exact number of strokes as the hole's par value. If you are having a good golf game, you might earn a birdie, which is considered one under par. The bird reference goes back to a game among golf movers and shakers near the turn of the century when a good golfer had actually hit a bird that was flying by. Birdies also refer to a perfect round of golf, which happens when an excellent golfer shoots a birdie on all 18 holes of a golf course.

The avian theme continues as golf scores improve. An eagle is the name of the score when you have earned a two under par. It might happen if you can make a par-five hole in only two strokes to the green and then finish the golf course with only one shot to earn the putt.

More rare is the albatross. This happens when the lucky golfer scores a three under par.

Most exceptional shot in a golf game is the condor. This can happen by scoring a hole in one on a par-five hole, or making it in two shots on a par-six hole. If you are lucky and practice golf a lot, you might score a condor at an Orange County golf course.
