A wealth of OC tee times await you at such interesting courses as Scholl Canyon Golf Course, which will challenge you with its canyons, distract you with its views, and invite you to pour all of your concentration into its large greens. If you are just starting out on your golfing adventure, a trip to the Lake Forest Golf and Practice Center might be just the golfing environment to spur you on to higher levels of golf achievement. This golf course is designed to help beginners learn the sport. They offer a large range, a real grass hitting area and roomy putting green, along with five chipping greens that provide bunkers practice as well. Quality lessons for all ability levels are also available at Lake Forest Golf and Practice Center. One aspect of the game of golf that may help improve your game is understanding par.

Par refers to the number of strokes a golfer should take to to complete a hole. It is also the name of the number of strokes that it would take to complete all the holes in a round of golf. Par for a particular hole is made up of the number of strokes it should take an experienced golfer to reach the green plus 2 extra strokes for putts. So a par-4 hole would mean that it would take you two strokes to reach the green, and have two strokes left for the putt. Clearly, the longer holes require a greater number of strokes to reach the green, and are thus assigned a higher par value. On some golf courses, Par values for a hole tend to range from 3 to 5 strokes.

The par value is assigned to a particular hole based on the distance the golf ball will cover from the tee shot to the pin or flagstick. A par 3 hole will cover 100 to 250 yards, a par 4 hole comes in around 251 and 450 yards, while a par 5 ranges from 451 to 600 yards. On average, a typical 18-hole golf course will offer a 72 par value, comprised of four par-3 holes, ten par-4 holes, and four par-5 holes.

Hazards and the terrain of the particular golf course can influence the par value of a hole. A hilly golf course can add to the strokes needed to reach the green, as can maneuvering around water or trees, and so this can increase the par value of a hole.

Golfers determine their score on a golf course relative to the course's par. If a course offers a par 72, and the golfer completes the course in 76 strokes, then that golfer has earned +4, which is called four over par. If a good golfer completes the course in fewer than par 72, say in 69 strokes, then his or her score would be three under par. Come improve your par at OC golf courses.
