Beginners to the game of golf sometimes struggle with all of the different golf terminology that one is expected to know. One way to increase your knowledge of the game of golf is to understand the difference between match play and stroke play.

In terms of match play, the hole is the basis of scoring. Unlike the idea of par, in match play the greatest number of points you can score per hole is one. The golfers play the hole, and the golfer who achieves the hole with the least number of strokes is awarded one point for the hole. If there is a tie, then each golf player receives half a point. Match play is sometimes won by players who choose an aggressive plan of attack on the golf course, because hitting a par score will likely not be good enough to win the hole.

In contrast, stroke play, which is also known as medal play, is what tends to be used at most professional golfing tournaments. Stroke play is similar to par playing, because golf players keep track of how many golf strokes it takes to play an entire round, and then the player with the lowest score will win the round. A golf game that uses scores in stroke play referred to them in par terms, such as one under par or two over par.

Things get interesting in stroke play when a tie occurs during a professionalgolf tournament using this scoring system. A playoff is held among all the players who are tied, often using a predetermined number of holes. If two golfers are still tied after the playoff, then they switch to a sudden death playoff form where the winner will be the first to win a hole and thus be named the winner of the golf championship. This can be very thrilling to watch between exceptional golf players. Golfing in sudden death might run for only one hole, but it can go on for up to an excruciating eight holes. Only The Masters uses a sudden death playoff format, while the US Open follows an 18-hole playoff. The Open Championship relies on a 4 hole playoff in cases of a tie, and the PGA Championship runs on a 3-hole playoff. No matter which scoring system you choose to use, you will have fun playing golf with your friends on any of Los Angeles' delightful golf courses.
